The Lioncare School is a specialist educational setting linked to The Lioncare Group's residential provision, but equally able to accept students living elsewhere.  Designed for students with emotional and behavioural difficulties, it offers individualised programmes of education covering full national curriculum and tailored to the individual needs of each student.  Being situated in a residential area ensues students attending our school remain integrated members of their community.

Students at The Lioncare School may have been excluded from mainstream schools or were under-achieving within the mainstream environment.  They may have unrealised intellectual abilities, experienced significant difficulties forming positive meaningful relationships and have difficulty expressing themselves. Some will have experienced abuse or rejection from their families, had multiple home placements,  involved themselves in self-injurious behaviour, or regularly been absent without authority.

For many, the word "school" may feel threatening and intimidating, filling them with an unbearable sense of dread and fear, and provoking extreme reactions in them.

We believe each student, irrespective of age or background, has the ability to learn, the potential to ‘grow’, and the capacity to change. Through a process of nurture, guidance, safety and positive learning experiences, students are able to replace past experiences of failure and underachievement with successful and personally rewarding outcomes. This allows them to revise distorted and usually inaccurate perceptions of their own ability. They are empowered to reflect about themselves and their abilities in a more satisfying and healthy way thus offering real direction to their intellectual and personal growth.

The educational provision at The Lioncare School aims to meet the diverse needs of the student group through individual education programmes, small class groups at KS2, KS3, and KS4 level, and a high ratio of Teachers to students supported by full time Learning Support Assistants.

In addition to the range of subjects taught at The Lioncare School, students with specific assessed needs in numeracy and literacy skills are offered programmes of 1:1 intensive support from our specialist numeracy and literacy programme.

The Lioncare School is a registered AEB examination centre and students are encouraged to sit relevant exams when appropriate.  This familiarises students with exam situations and provides them with opportunities to gain recognised qualifications.  Students are entered for SATS exams in year 6 and 9.  Learning towards gaining GCSEs can  be facilitated through partnerships with local mainstream schools and colleges.  We offer KS4 students the opportunity of work experience, and to work towards achieving the ASDAN qualification.

We recognise that "positive educational outcomes" for students entails much more than simply achieving academic status.  There has to be an appropriate balance between academic learning, exploration of effective social skills, developing strategies for behaviour self-management, recognition of achievements, and opportunities for emotional growth and understanding.  Offering students an empathic, reflective, responsible, stimulating, and enjoyable learning environment helps them gain these qualities for themselves, freeing them up to make full use of the many living-learning experiences available to them at The Lioncare School.

Our aim is to assist students in coming to terms with difficult areas of their lives, consolidate areas in which they function well, begin to view education as a positive and rewarding experience, and where possible promote their successful return to a mainstream school or college placement .
